E.B. Cosby of the E.B. Cosby Construction Company of Abilene, Texas had commissioned the production of these locomotive irons as presentation gifts. This iron is unique in that the fuel tank is the engine body. These irons were made 1888 to 1890. They are desirable for their aesthetics and uniqueness, but there are a lot of other irons pictured on this website that are much more rare than the E.B. Cosby iron.
The 2 most notable differences between these irons are . . . some only have one patent date (Oct. 23, '88) and others have both of the patent dates . . . some have a rounded bump on the front and back of the engine/fuel tank and others have a squared off bump on the front and back.
3 of the below Cosby irons have their fuel valves or burner assemblies missing which makes me believe that the design of these thin looking fuel valves sticking too far out from the back of the iron body makes them easy to get banged and snapped off.
The irons with only 1 patent date are the earlier model irons (pre-1889 patent date).
I would like to thank Jay Raymond and Dennis McDonald, fellow PITCA members, for sharing their knowledge on these E.B. Cosby irons.
